The Sooners traveled to Manhattan last Saturday to take on the Kansas State Wildcats. After blowing a 20 point deficit to the Longhorns in Dallas the previous weekend the Sooners looked to try and get a win in convincing fashion.
That plan went out the window when K-State running back Alex Barnes took a 75 yard run to the house. The Sooners bounced back marching down the field in 7 plays resulting in a touchdown pass to Dmitri Flowers. K-State went on to score 14 unanswered points to put the ball game at 21-7. Wildcat quarterback, Alex Delton made the sooner defense look silly with all of his designed quarterback runs. The sooners finished the half tacking on 3 to put the game at 21-10.
Baker Mayfield and company had to come out strong in the second half to come back and beat this K-State team. The Sooners started the half with a 7 play drive resulting in a Baker Mayfield touchdown on the ground bringing the game back within reach. Mike Stoops made some great adjustments in the locker room limiting the wildcats to only 39 3rd quarter yards. The Sooners ability to finish drives in the end zone continued at the end of the 3rd when they had to settle for 3 once again.
At the start of the 4th quarter Mayfield drove the Sooners 93 yards and tacked on a 2-point conversion to take the lead 28-21. A mishap from a fumbled snap on a special teams play gave the Wildcats a short field to eventually tie up the game. Baker bolstered his argument for Heisman with his 4th quarter play. He drove the Sooners down again to take the lead 35-28. The defense struggled again against Alex Delton in company. The wildcats drove 75 yards to tie the game at 35. Mayfield knew what he had to do. He had to give the Sooners a chance to win this ball game. The Sooners drove down to the K-State 22 yard line with time winding down in the quarter. On a conservative play call Rodney Anderson busted a run to the sideline and trotted in the end zone to take the lead with 7 seconds left.
The Sooners came back and beat Bill Snyder in Manhattan holding onto their CFP hopes. Mayfield and company must start finishing drives to beat upcoming oppenents like TCU and OSU. Let's see how the rest of the season plays out.
