After watching the videos in this unit and reviewing the terms in this assignment I used the camera on my phone to capture design and advertisements that captured my attention. I took photos of three mailers, a campaign sign and an advertisement and a drive-thru window.
The first design I pictured was a Whataburger mailer advertising their new Mushroom swiss burger. I thought this mailer effectively used the design concept of metaphors/symbols. The mailer communicates quickly and effectively by using the recognizable Whataburger imagery. When a consumer sees the mailer they will recognize what Whataburger is trying to convey about their new product quickly.

The second design I pictured was another food mailer. This one was from Braums. It has a design on the front side and removable coupons on the backside. In my personal opinion, Braums used the concept of minimalism in this design. The half page design only contains a few crucial elements that speak to the Braums brand. A burger, shake and a hot fudge sundae are pictured in this large half page design. The minimal use of these elements speaks to what the Braums brand is really about.

The third design I took a photo of was a campaign sign for a Norman City Council canidate. The element that was used effectively in this campaign sign was typography. A campaign is only effective if people driving by can easily read the candidates name. This sign uses a bolded and large font that is both readable and aesthetically pleasing. The sign is a good example of effective typography.

The fourth design I took a photo of is an image at a drive-thru. The design uses the design concept of balance well. The entire design is filled up with elements. There is copy at the top, images in the middle and the logo at the bottom. The design balances the elements and white space well to create and effective design.

The fifth and final design I pictured was a mailer from Marco's Pizza. I chose to take a photo of this design because I think it doesn't showcase any of these design elements well. The Marco's pizza mailer's form does not flow well. The typefaces and graphic elements do not work well together. The fonts they chose don't match and the recognizable Marco's logo is placed in the bottom right corner of the page. Overall, the Marco's pizza mailer is a bad example of the design concept of form.
